In short, Sivananda uses inversions to calm the mind and body early, while Ashtanga uses standing poses to fire up the body and build a strong foundation before cooling down at the end.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is a physically demanding style of yoga that synchronizes yoga postures with the breath. It is designed to build internal heat, which is meant to purify the body. A typical Ashtanga practise begins with sun salutations and then moves onto standing postures. Ashtanga yoga is ideally for more advanced practitioners because both the rigor and the sequencing demands certain muscle tone and expertise.

Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda yoga is a hatha based yoga developed by Swami Sivananda. The primary focus of this type of yoga is to improve the health and wellness of the practitioner. Unlike the more athletic styles of yoga, such as vinyasa or Ashtanga, sivananda yoga incorporates a lot more relaxation and deep yogic breathing exercises. All Sivananda yoga teachers are certified through the Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Course.

★Sivananda Gurgaonに質問してみた!

I have a question. How come Sivananda yoga starts from inverted asanas while Ashthanga starts with standing asanas?

Thank you for practicing with us.

There are many reasons, including physiological(生理学的), psychological as well as spiritual.

The inverted postures activate the pituitary and pineal glands, the master endocrine glands, and then the subsequent postures move downwards activating the thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, pancreas..all the way down to the reproductive organs.

This gives a flow and rhythm to the body.

It is also spiritually understood as stimulating the sahasrara padma, the highest chakra, at the top of the head through which the divine energy enters into the body..moving down through shoulderstand, forward and backward bends and ultimately the standing postures.

That way the energy moves from the top to toes, invigorating all the organs, and then during the final relaxation we move the energy from toes to head through autosuggestions. This way, the energy which enters, also exits, completing the energy loop, and detachment/aparigraha.

The pituitary gland is known as the "master gland" of the endocrine system because it controls the functions of many other endocrine (内分泌)glands, including the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive glands. Located at the base of the brain, this pea-sized gland regulates critical processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction by secreting hormones that signal other glands to act.

autosuggestion.

Every action is the result of thought which originates in the mind consciously or subconsciously. Thoughts take the form of action and there is a reaction in the body. When we want to perform an action, a thought is generated in the mind and transmitted to the brain. The brain telegraphs the message through the nerves and the muscles contract. Just as behind muscular contraction there is thought, so also behind relaxation there is thought. Just as we send a message to contract the muscles, so also can we send a message to relax the muscles

But as we have no control over such ‘involuntary’ organs as the heart, lungs, liver, brain etc., we cannot directly send the thoughts for relaxation to these organs. Yet they too need rest. Here yogis use the subconscious mind, which controls all the autonomic functions of the involuntary organs. During this process of relaxation, the conscious mind sends a message to a particular organ, such as the heart or liver. This message is received by the subconscious mind and the order is immediately carried out. This relaxation technique is known as autosuggestion.Using this technique one can relax all the involuntary organs in the body.
