My father celebrate three bdays ,one based on tithi ,on based on school certificate and one is original bday

That's not what the op meant bro, all hindus have a birthday according to the tithi and Gregorian calendar .... My birthday falls a day before gudi padwa or hindu new year and according to Gregorian calendar its 8 april , some people decrease their ages on aadhar card for govt exams and stuff

Tithiって初めて聞いた。

ティティとは、月と太陽の黄経差=月の満ち欠けを、12°ごと=30個に等分したものです。

★Key reasons, with examples and mechanics

1)Late or absent registration
Civil-registration systems in much of India became reliable only in the late 20th century. Births in rural or remote areas were often unregistered or registered months or years later.
When registration occurred late, officials or families commonly used the date of registration or an approximate date instead of the true date.
School admission cut-offs and age eligibility
Schools and competitive exams use fixed age cut-offs (e.g., “must be born on or before X date”).
Parents sometimes advance or delay a recorded birth date to meet admission or exam eligibility, avoid repeat years in school, or gain an age advantage for quotas/reservations.
Example: shifting a birthday forward by a few months to meet a preschool cutoff so a child can start earlier.
Administrative convenience and rounded dates
Officials and families often prefer simple, round dates (1st, 1st of January, or 1st of April) when exact birth time is unknown. Using the first day of a month made processing simpler for past paper systems.
Many government forms historically accepted month and year only, and clerks entered a default day.
Calendar confusion and local practices
India uses multiple calendars (Gregorian, Hindu regional calendars, Islamic lunar calendar). Converting a traditional birth tithi or lunar date to the Gregorian date can produce different results; families sometimes choose a convenient Gregorian date.
Astrological or ritual observances may record the “tithi” as the relevant birth datum; the civil certificate gets a converted date that may appear shifted.
Identity, migration, and document consolidation
When moving between states, schools, or countries, families consolidate multiple informal documents into a single “official” date, choosing whichever date helps administratively.
Migrant families relying on landlord, school, or hospital affidavits sometimes accepted the date an authority entered.
Incentives from quotas, benefits, and pensions
Age-based reservations, scholarships, child welfare benefits, and retirement/pension rules create incentives to record specific birth years. Small shifts can change eligibility for affirmative action categories or benefits.
Medical delivery settings and home births
In institutional births, hospitals generally record accurate time/date. In home births attended by family or traditional birth attendants, the exact clock time might not be noted, producing approximations later.
How common and how serious

Frequency varies by region, urban vs. rural, and socio‑economic status. Urban, hospital-born generations after the 1990s show far fewer discrepancies; older cohorts and rural areas show more.
Most adjustments are pragmatic (rounding, registration date), not elaborate identity fraud. However, inconsistent dates across documents can cause legal and administrative problems later (passport issuance, inheritance disputes, pension eligibility, exam disqualification).
Policy and practical responses

Improved universal birth registration, digital civil registration systems with hospital reporting, and stricter verification for school admissions have reduced approximate dates.
Courts and administrations accept documentary correction procedures (gazette notifications, affidavits, school records, hospital records) to reconcile genuine inconsistencies.
For individuals: gather contemporaneous records (hospital discharge, school enrollment, vaccination cards) to establish a consistent official date when needed.
Typical illustrative stories (examples, not personal claims)

A village child born at home in 1982 had parents register the birth two years later; the registrar put “1 January 1984” for convenience, and that date persisted on school and ration-card records.
A parent wanting a child admitted that year to a private pre-school adjusted the recorded birthday forward by three months to meet the cut-off; the school accepted the certificate and the family used that date thereafter.
A family converted a lunar birth tithi to Gregorian and picked the nearest first-of-month date to avoid confusion on forms.
Bottom line
Multiple structural factors—late registration, administrative convenience, calendar conversions, and incentives tied to age—drive the widespread phenomenon of birthdays on Indian birth certificates differing from true birth moments. Improved hospital-based registration and digital record systems have reduced the practice for younger generations, but legacy documents and pragmatic adjustments remain common.

◆I am officially 6 months older than my real age (born mid-70s).

My parent wanted me to be a doctor. In India, the minimum age to enter a medical college is/was 18. So when I started going to school, my parent registered by date-of-birth of 6 months earlier. So I was able to get to Grade-1 sooner than I would otherwise have, and as planned, I was exactly 18 when I completed school and about to enter college).

And after all this, I ended up an engineer (for which there is/was no such age-criterion).

I think it is not as easy to manipulate date-of-birth now.But here is one thing to remember that this was happening more before 90s. Now people are smart and aware technology makes the records accurate.
