Sivananda

Mantra

The main opening mantra used in Sivananda yoga is called the Dhyana Sloka. Here it is in Sanskrit and English, followed by an explanation:Sanskrit:
गजाननं भूतगणादिसेवितं
कपित्थजम्बूफलचारुभक्षणम् ।
उमासुतं शोकविनाशकारकं
नमामि विघ्नेश्वरपादपङ्कजम् ॥Transliteration:
Gajānanam bhūtagaṇādisevitaṁ
Kapitthajambūphalacārubhakṣaṇam
Umāsutaṁ śokavinaśakārakaṁ
Namāmi vighneśvarapādapaṅkajamEnglish translation:
I bow to the lotus feet of Ganesha,
Who is honored by the hosts of celestial beings,
Who delights in eating kapittha and jambu fruits,
Who is the son of Uma, and the destroyer of sorrow.Explanation:
This mantra is an invocation to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It is chanted at the beginning of Sivananda yoga classes and practices to help practitioners tune into the divine and overcome ego-based obstacles. The mantra describes Ganesha's attributes:

  • His elephant head (Gajānanam)
  • His popularity among celestial beings
  • His fondness for certain fruits
  • His status as the son of goddess Uma (Parvati)
  • His ability to destroy sorrow and remove obstacles

By chanting this mantra, practitioners aim to:

  1. Connect with the divine energy within themselves
  2. Remove mental obstacles before beginning their practice
  3. Invoke Ganesha's blessings for a successful and obstacle-free practice

The act of chanting itself is believed to create positive vibrations, purify the mind, and help practitioners enter a meditative state. This mantra sets the tone for the yoga practice, encouraging students to approach their practice with devotion and openness.
